An Understanding of Buildings

Time: 9.30am – 4.30pm
This course is designed to provide delegates with an overview of building design and construction and the problems that can occur in buildings.
It is aimed at both those who work in estate agency or lettings and is intended to enable delegates to recognise various styles of building; to be aware of what potential problems occur in buildings; and to be able to recognise obvious signs of those problems.
This is an essential course for those agents or property managers who wish to be able to discuss property with potential buyers or landlords knowledgeably.
It is not designed as any form of surveying course and no prior knowledge is necessary.
The day will cover the following topics:
- An overview of building styles and periods
- An outline of building structure
- Potential problems stemming from construction
- Water, gas and electric – potential problems
- Internal problems in a property including rot and damp
- The impact of safety regulations
- Fire risks
- Some less common problems: asbestos; radon; TV masts; pylons
- Conservation and planning concerns
