MAKING A MANAGER

Dates: 9th July and 23rd July
Times: 9.30 – 4.30pm – numbers will be strictly limited for this course

This course is aimed at potential managers, newly appointed managers or managers who wish to review and upgrade their skills. The course is delivered over two days in order to delve into the core subjects and maximise the opportunity to explore ways of producing the best results in the manager and, in turn, their staff.

As you will note from the above dates the two days are separated by a gap so that the delegate is not away from their office for an unrealistic amount of time and can prepare for the second day.

Please note also that the cost of this course (see below) covers both days. It is not possible for a delegate to just book one or other of the days

The first day will cover the following:

● The role of the manager – the skills of being a manager do not come automatically with the job offer. What does being a manager encompass, how does it alter the manager’s day to day outlook?

● The demographics of your business and the core principles – A manager will not be successful if they do not have an understanding of what your business is about and what it is aiming for. This knowledge will shape the attitudes and drive for the business.

● Developing a business plan – the manager must be an integral part of the success of their branch or department. They must have a vision of where the business is heading and how it can be built upon to increase turnover and profitability

● Running a business meeting – whether it is the morning meeting or a board meeting the event must be planned and be used for productive results

● Presentation skills – a manager needs to be able to present their ideas in a format that will engage the listener and engender the outcome they are after. Whether it be an agreement to proposals or to precede a brain storming session. This sector will form part of the exercise on the next training day

● Interviewing – if a mistake is made in staff recruitment it is not only costly in terms of finance but can also be destructive to the team. Planning and preparation beforehand is essential as also is having a format for interviewing to provide equal comparisons of candidates

The second day will cover the following:

● Presentations by the delegates – on the first day the delegates will be given a subject to present to the room. Appraisal and feedback will be given on the content and delivery

● Assessing the developmental levels of staff – before delegation can be carried out the manager needs to understand whether the staff are able or willing to take on new challenges

● Delegation and time management – the productive manager needs to delegate in order to free themselves up for the job they are required to do and also to develop the individual staff member. There is a difference between task allocation and delegation!

● Staff motivation – the manager cannot achieve the required goals without the help of the staff. The manager should understand what makes their staff motivated or de-motivated.

● Target setting – all staff should have something to aim for. Market requirements change and the manager should be able to vary the targets accordingly.

● Redirecting staff behaviour/performance – unfortunately there are times when a staff member is either not performing to target or have an attitude that is impacting negatively on the team. Steps to re-direct the behaviour are essential.

● Staff appraisals – an essential tool for the personal development of the individual if carried out properly. A poorly conducted appraisal can be damaging, the correct approach and process can make all the difference

The course will include self-assessment ‘inventories’ relating to certain topics that the delegates can take with them to review their approach to the subject.

Total Course Price £295.00 plus VAT per delegate
